The Dark Places

Ok, now that I'm done with the portraiture for now, my next assignment is to photograph a place. I'm supposed create a mood through lighting and evoke an emotion. I'm guessing that I should take some cues from the film noir period (1940s) and turn a familiar place into something unfamiliar and unknown. In my professor's words, I need to use "lighting to create suspense, tension, anxiety, and terror visually."
Anyone have suggestions?
